James Daugherty (1889-1974) was born in Asheville, North Carolina and attended the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. He also spent two years in London studying under Frank Brangwyn. He was originally a muralist and his work hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Smithsonian. He also worked on theater sets, illustrated fiction books, and became a children's book author and illustrator.
